Even so, there are extraordinary stretches, particularly Part I of the work, molded by Furtwängler with enormous espressivo and a quiet, slow-burning passion and introspection. In contrast, the students' music and the Evocation of Part III cry out for a sharper cutting edge and greater movement. Yet there seems to be a method at work here, a striving by Furtwängler for tempos that will minimize the sectional character of the work and bind its disparate parts into a cohesive whole.
