It took a week to put everything in place for a completely choreographed arrest. Scharf’s plan called for teams of detectives from both Skagit and Snohomish to be positioned before the arrest, ready to interview Talbott’s relatives as soon as he was in custody. The goal was to avoid even the possibility of them talking to one another before the police got their statements.

Scharf put together a slide presentation on the murders and the new suspect, photographs of Talbott and his relatives, and a list of more than seventy questions he wanted the detective teams to ask each family member. They ranged from whom he dated and whom his friends were, past and present, to whether he liked to hitchhike, ride ferries, or take Greyhound buses. He even wanted to ask if Talbott might have a twin brother (because twins have the same DNA).

Scharf also had a plan for how he would confront and, hopefully, interview Talbott at the trucking company. And he had an elaborate script for how he wanted his conversation and questioning with Talbott to go.

When everything was ready, the arrest day was set: Thursday, May 17, 2018.
