Coffee can display at a general store in Two Egg, circa 1969–72. FMA/Toby Massey.

While I do not remember the method Granny Trixie used to make coffee for Granddaddy, I do recall the way he sipped his coffee from a saucer. He wanted his coffee “scalding hot,” as my mother would say, and Granny would take the pot from the stovetop burner and fill his cup. He then would pour a small amount into a saucer, allow it to cool and sip, filling the saucer as necessary. Still a child, I felt so special when he let me have a sip of his strong, black, cold coffee, but that ended my coffee drinking for a while. At home growing up, the coffee was brewed each morning, first on the stovetop, then with an electric percolator. Cleaning the insides of those pots and disposing of the grounds lodged in the tiny holes of the metal filters was a thing of the past as soon as Mr. Coffee was introduced to the world. Not a coffee drinker yet, I still loved the smell and watching the amber-colored liquid bubble up through the glass knob on the top of the stovetop pot and the electric percolator.
