Chapter Twenty
Benedict Cashman and I didn’t get off on the right foot, that much I can tell you. If it was up to me, I’d have nothing to do with the man. He’s a regular wet sock, as far as I’m concerned. Not that he’s a terrible person, but the way I see it, it’s best to just stay away from people you don’t see eye to eye with. Once you get the hint that there’re some irreconcilable differences, what’s the point of hanging around each other?
Course, that’s what Chance used as an excuse for his second divorce. Irreconcilable differences. First divorce, too, actually. Probably where I first heard the term. But still, I’d rather not have to drive through the gate and up the circular driveway if I didn’t have to.
But I do have to. The 21st is the day the Cubs are letting us use Wrigley, and it falls on a weekend. As luck would have it, it happens to be the one weekend a month that Jason spends with his father. More like it’s the weekend he stays at his father’s mansion. From what I’ve seen, they don’t spend any time together. That kind of bothers me, to tell the truth, being that the kid has a heart defect and all. And he’s over there way more than once a month, too, because sometimes Anna picks up an extra shift and can’t afford to pay a babysitter every time.
But that’s not really my business. All I know is I need permission for this trip I have planned. Either that or I have to go to Plan B. Now I have a Plan B to be sure. Just would rather not have to use it, as it could get a bit complicated.
See, Plan B involves things that could get me in a lot of trouble. Driving without a license would only be a small part of it. If I have to resort to Plan B, I figure I have a fifty-fifty shot at taking my last breath in prison. Bad things are likely to happen with Plan B. It’d be a whole lot easier this way. So I drop Jason and Tiegan off at their houses and make my way to Benedict Cashman’s mansion.
The guard nods to me and lets me in without any questions this time. At least he seems friendly, but I don’t expect the same from the master of the place. Sure enough, I’m forced to stand for a good minute or two waiting for him to answer the door. When he finally does, he doesn’t look any happier than last time I was here.
“Mr. Cashman,” I say. “Name’s Murray McBride, Jason’s Big Brother. We met last week briefly.”
“You don’t have to introduce yourself every time. I remember. You’re the one who had my little boy kissing girls. What are you doing here?”
“Well, I’d like to take Jason up to the apple for a bit this weekend, see? But he’s scheduled to be here.
