Much useless talk can be heard and many useless words read. One only learns by the practice of demonstrating to one I’self. If the student has really absorbed the ideas of simplicity in design, figure, light and dark and the relative value of features and other units in the composition, he should make pictures. These things will grow as pictures are made.

All the foregoing presupposes the student has some knowledge of design and the figure.

Abstract design should be studied and principals discovered by the student should be used in his compositions. The abstract patterns of light and shade should be applied whenever the opportunity presents itself. All compositions should be based upon such firm foundations.

Students cannot spend too much time over their plan for each picture. No matter how well drawn the figures, if the foundation is weak the picture suffers.

Study design, cannot be said too often.

Study the work of the masters, old and modern. Try to know how they arrived at their results.
