Sharon had a quiet supper alone, wondering how long it would be before she heard anything from Tybalt. She wished again that he'd let her go with him. It was hard to sit and wait, not knowing what was going on. She was finished with her meal and preparing to leave the table when Sheriff Duffy Monnahan came into the cafe. She remained seated, for he had turned towards her.
He swept off his hat and pulled out the chair opposite her. As he sat down, his eyes scanned the room quickly, as if he did not want to draw any undue attention to them.
"I done some checking on that Orphan Mine for you, Miss McBride. Things are a little mixed up about it."
"How would that be, Mr. Monnahan?"
"The mine is registered as your pa's, but he only brought in samples once. As far as anyone knows, he never did bring any gold out of that mine."
"But you said it was mixed up?"
Duffy frowned, a wrinkle furrowing his brow. "The Orphan Mine is bringing in highgrade ore almost every month, according to the man over at the smelter. He claims that there's been four thousand and eight hundred dollars taken out of there in the past ten weeks."
"That's a great deal of money," Sharon said.
"The Casto bunch has been bringing in the ore," Duffy went on. "I wouldn't trust them with a pair of my used socks, Miss McBride. They've never been known for anything honest in their lives."
"But they must be mining the gold from the Orphan Mine. Is there no way to prove that they swindled or stole the mine from me father?"
"I guess we'll have to see what your friend finds out. I don't envy him, putting his horns into the Castos' herd. Those boys play mighty rough."
"It's a-thanking you, I am," Sharon told him seriously. "Would you keep me informed on anything else you might be learning?"
"It'd be a pleasure, ma'am." Duffy grinned.
Sharon paid for her meal and returned to the hotel. She was even more worried about Tybalt, after her conversation with the sheriff. The men Tybalt was investigating sounded like a ruthless lot. She feared that something would happen to him and it would be all her fault.
Leaving the door open to her room, Sharon found the lamp and put a match to it. Then she turned up the wick, throwing light across the dark room. She was going to close the door but stopped dead in her tracks. Brian Donally was framed in the doorway!
Brian entered the room quickly, closing the door behind him. His malevolent eyes raked over Sharon, a wicked sneer on his lips, his jaw tightly knotted, fists clenched at his sides.
"You scream for help, and I'll break your neck!" he hissed.
Sharon stepped back, cringing against the wall. She looked helplessly around for a weapon, but the room had nothing to offer. Fear set in, gripping her heart with icy fingers.
"B-Brian?" she murmured.
"You're a deceitful woman, Sharon McBride," he said. "But you are going back with me.
