It was during the second or third obstacle of the day that the woman felt herself snap. Before the four of them split off into pairs. When they were all still having fun, acting like they used to when they were teenagers, back before she’d ever started feeling this way about her friend. And at first, it really was like the old days. She was actually enjoying herself. She was managing to keep the snipy thoughts at bay. And she was thinking: Maybe I can get past this. Maybe I can stop these feelings from coming. And she felt relief knowing that the letter was finally gone. That it had been safely destroyed. There was no longer any evidence of her feelings. So all she had to do was make those feelings go away.

But then her friend said something. Something stupid and wrong and there it was. That flash of irritation. That familiar flicker of rage. And all the feelings came rushing straight back, and when she was supposed to be helping her up out of one of the mud pits, a strange sensation came over her and she imagined herself reaching out and placing her hands on top of her friend’s head. Saw her hands pushing her down under the mud. Felt the top of her friend’s head pushing back against her and imagined herself holding her down. Keeping her down until she stopped.

She gave her entire body a shake. No! That was an awful thing to think. A horrible, horrendous, terrifying thought. And she didn’t mean it. She absolutely did NOT mean it.

She briefly closed her eyes, mentally pulling herself back together.

What is wrong with me?
