âAre you sure itâs not Covid?â Kayden asked, watching her mom breathing heavily after the coughing fit sheâd just had.
Kimberly rolled her eyes. âEveryone is so freaked out by this frigging virus! Itâs a cold, I probably got it at work.â
âYou mean where the manager tells you that wearing masks is just going to freak out customers?â Kayden asked darkly.
âKay, itâs fine,â her mom assured her. âIâm just going to go to bed and sleepâthatâll probably help.â
Two days later, things were worse, not better.
âYou need to go to the hospital,â Kayden insisted.
Kimberly shook her head, doing her best to hide how worried she was. She was having trouble catching her breath at that point. She told Kayden it was because of all the coughing sheâd been doing, and she hoped that it really was just that. But sheâd been seeing people on the news who were being put on ventilators and that definitely scared her.
âIâll give it a couple more days,â Kimberly told her daughter.
Two days later, Kimberly had to admit that she did need to go to a doctor. âIâm just gonna go down to the free clinic.â
âJust go to the hospital!â Kayden told her. âWe could sit down at the clinic for hours before they see you!â
Kimberly shook her head again. âWe nothing, you stay here and do your homework.â
âNo way!â Kayden protested.
âJustâ¦do whatâ¦I say,â Kimberly gasped out between heavy breaths, her look stern. âPlease!â She took Kaydenâs hands in hers. âI donât want you where you can catch it from other people, okay?â
Kayden wanted to snap that if she was going to catch it, she probably already had it, but she knew her mom didnât need any more hassle. In truth she had already been feeling a scratchy throat start. She didnât tell her mother that, not wanting to worry her more. Finally she nodded. âOkay, but you call me and let me know what happens.â
âI will.â
Early the next morning, Kayden finally got a call from her mother. âThey put me in a bed,â Kimberly told her. âItâs definitely Covid, but Iâll be okay.â
Kayden blew her breath out. âWhen can I come see you?â
âNo, I donât want you down here,â Kimberly insisted. âAnd if you call here looking for me, ask for Jane Smith.â
âWhat?! Why?â Kayden exclaimed.
âBecause I donât have the money to pay this bill, and if they know I have a job, theyâll take everything I make. We canât afford that.â
âI thought it was a free clinic.â
âIt is, unless they find out you have the means to pay. I told them I donât. Just listen to me, Kayden. You just keep going to school and acting like Iâm home, okay? We donât need the nosey people in the neighborhood to start talking. I donât want you to worry. Okay?â
âOkay. Call me tonight and let me know youâre okay,â Kayden said fretfully.
âI will,â Kimberly told her.
It was another three days when the phone calls stopped. Kayden worried all day, finally calling the clinic that night, asking for Jane Smithâs bed.
