The Third Thing is I didn’t say no.

The Senator’s car pulled up to the curb outside the restaurant. We hadn’t said another word since the request. I think he was reading me, even in my stillness. He walked up to the car door. He looked like he belonged inside the vehicle, both of them sleek and gleaming.

“You don’t want a ride up?” he finally asked. “Save you the climb.”

“No, sir.”

He strolled forward and waved off the driver, who had started to move toward the Senator’s door. With his hand on the handle, the Senator turned around.

“One more thing,” he said. “It’s going to have to be with a gun.”

I surveyed the street. A few groups dined outside two buildings down the block, but no one was paying us any attention.

“And there’s not a big rush yet. You have all summer to think about this.”

“And in the fall?” I asked, still in a state of shock.

He opened his door. The driver retook his seat. The Senator hovered, half-bent to slide into the backseat.

“We’ll jump.”
