Later in the evening Mikkel Thøgersen came. He found Axel and Lucie sitting with the body, each holding the stump of a candle. Mikkel said nothing. His face was empty and haggard. When he had looked a while at the dead young man, who was now lying on the floor, he suggested that they lower him to the courtyard so that he could be taken away. Axel and Lucie went in and lay down, and they heard Mikkel talking half-aloud to himself.

When Mikkel came into Axel’s room after having seen to the removal of the body, Axel was asleep. Lucie lay awake but she paid no heed to Mikkel. When he went out she was staring into the candlelight, meek and dejected.

Lucie was the first one to awake the next day. The candles on the table had burned down but it was already daylight. She sat up and looked around, moving her eyes back and forth as if she were listening, as if someone were calling her. Then she opened very carefully the horn capsule around Axel’s neck, took out the piece of parchment, and hid it in her sack. Axel had told Lucie about his treasure—he had even talked about it in his sleep. Just to be sure, Lucie lay quiet for a few minutes. Axel was fast asleep. Then she edged out of bed, put on her clothes, and slipped quietly away.
