Erwin Rommel had managed to sweep up two hundred “volunteers” from his slowly arriving 7th Panzer Division outside Bari. This gave him a nominal third company. It was still a courtesy battalion, but he would make do. At least Strauss had somehow managed to acquire a surplus of glider pilots. Rommel had traded the extras to Kesselring’s staff for a battalion of 1st Mountain, so he now had a short brigade. He also had the outline of his “brigade’s” place in the war plan. Ramcke was happy to give him his own airfield, Luqa, as a target. Ramcke was happy because it meant he could land three battalions at Hal Far. Why Ramcke wanted to concentrate on the far end of the island was beyond Rommel’s ken. He saw Ramcke as an administrative officer who had been overpromoted beyond his talents. The key issue to Rommel was a glitch he noticed in the evolving plan. Ramcke kept discussing an air landing AT dawn. Kesselring’s staff officers kept saying BY dawn in their plans. Rommel saw no reason to resolve the problem. Kesselring had been clear he was not in the higher command loop. He simply put his boys through a few simple night exercises without explaining why.
