I owe you an apology for being a dick earlier. Iâd like to say sorry in person, if you donât mind me coming over.
Maya hovered her finger over the phone for a second, but the decision was already made.
Sure. Free whenever you are.
Thanks. On my way.
Maya let out a breath, unsure how to navigate this situation. She blew her fringe out of her eyes. He couldâve just apologized on the phone, but the fact that he wanted to do it face-to-face was touching.
There was a knock at her bedroom door, and she opened it to see Yvonne standing there. âCan I have a word?â
âSure.â She gestured her mum in. âWhatâs up, buttercup?â
Smiling, Yvonne sat on the bed. âDo you really want to send those CVs out? Or did you only agree to it to please your father?â
The hair on the back of Mayaâs neck pricked up. âNo, I want to do it,â she said quickly.
Yvonne raised her eyebrows, but Maya got in there before she could ask more. âSamâll be here in a minute. We need to discuss something.â
âOh yes? Whatâs going on with you guys?â
âI donât know, to be honest. Weâre kind of friends now.â She paused to sit next to her mum. âScratch that, we are actual friends. Itâs just a bit of a rocky road.â

Glancing down, Maya rubbed her toe over the carpet. âDad used to think Sam was a bad influence, back when I started at the ski center.â
âHow come? He didnât know about your involvement?â
âNo, he didnât. It was a misunderstanding, really. I enjoyed working there and wondered . . .â She hesitated, choosing her words carefully. âWhether I might like to pursue it as a career, rather than going to uni. Sam encouraged me to speak to Dad about it, and I did. But . . . Dad and I both decided it was best that I continue with the plan for an accountancy career. None of it was Samâs influence, he was just trying to help me voice my feelings.â
She was aware it was a heavily edited version of the truth. But if she told her mum the exact details, then it would be easy for Yvonne to put two and two together. And she didnât want to put her mum in a difficult position with her dad.
The discussion with her dad had, in fact, been more of a blowout, which had taken place on the date of the Tavern night out. Maya had tried to explain that she wanted to consider deferring university and staying on at the resort. She hadnât even suggested that the situation be permanent. But Omar had still come down hard, rubbishing her plan and reducing her to an ashamed child. Sheâd made the mistake of mentioning Samâs support, and her
