Chapter Thirteen

"Jessie," Nadie said after she opened the door. "Good to see you. Come in." She stepped aside.

The warm aroma of beef drifted my way. My stomach grumbled with excitement.

"I hope I'm not too early," I said as I entered her home.

I stopped a few feet from her. A soft energy caressed my skin. Having felt it the last time I was near Nadie, I believed the power had to be coming from her. I'd sensed similar forces around Howard. Perhaps older Native Americans held more spiritual essence and that was why I sensed them. I wished I knew the answer.

"Lunch is almost ready. I made beef stew with cornbread on the side," she said as she closed the door.

"I hope you didn't go to much trouble just for me."

"Please, I rarely get visitors these days. Especially ones that don't mind me talking about Nina."

She passed me and headed into the living room. Her long gray hair flowed gracefully behind her. She wore a long denim skirt with a white blouse tucked.

"Have a seat." She gestured toward the sofa. "Would you like a drink?"

"I'm fine. I'll have some water with lunch."

I sat at the left end of the cream-colored sofa. The home looked modest and comfortable with light beige carpet and walls. The small living room had a table at each end of the sofa. A television backed up to a half wall that separated the kitchen and living areas. Before I'd taken a seat, I'd noticed a rectangular table with two chairs in the kitchen. Down the hall to my left, I spotted several doors including the one at the end.

Nadie entered the kitchen, then stopped with her back facing me. She lifted a lid and steam flew up.

"Do you know if Howard will be here soon?" she asked.

"I don't know. He said he was coming. He didn't know I left early."

After she tapped a spoon on a dish, she returned the lid. "Would you like to see Nina's room while we wait?"

"Sure."

She left the kitchen, then crossed the center of the living room. "Follow me."

I rose and walked behind her down the dim hallway. Shades covered the small window in the upper middle part of the wall. On my right, we passed a wide set of doors, then the bathroom. She led me to the first room, then flipped the light switch.

"This was her room. I haven't changed anything since she left. Well, I did clean it some," Nadie said as she came to a halt near a desk by the window in the back.

A twin-sized bed faced me from the left corner. The desk backed up to the window. Small pictures of Nina and her friends sat on her desk. A tall, five-drawer dresser stood against the wall on the right. Jewelry remained scattered on top of the dresser. To the right of it, a long mirror hung from the wall. I stopped in the middle of the room. Behind me, I found the closet. Unlike the energy I felt from Nadie, a soft buzz tickled my skin.
