Freud and Zionism

As the decade progressed, it would seem that Freud became more Jewish than ever. A memoir by Joseph Wortis, one of Freud’s patients, shows how loyal Freud was to Jews. Wortis had been reading about Einstein and told Freud that, though Einstein seemed likeable, “I confess I am not easily in sympathy with his or your Jewish nationalism.” Wortis wondered, “How far ought I to let my allegiance to Jews bring me?”

“That is not a problem for Jews,” Freud replied, “because the Gentiles make it unnecessary to decide; as long as Jews are not admitted into Gentile circles they have no choice but to band together.” He added that “ruthless egotism is much more common among Gentiles while family and intellectual life are on a higher plane among Jews.”

Rather amazed, Wortis replied, “You seem to think that the Jews are a superior people.”

“I think nowadays they are,” Freud said. To emphasize the point, Freud asked Wortis to consider the high number who had won Nobel Prizes. Freud also now became more interested in Zionism—and sympathetic to those who believed in it.
