Interlude Two

The Unlucky Dungeon

“You’re an Entropy dungeon, Percy,” Scarlet said, perching on the giant skull that held his core gem floating in one eye socket, picking at her sharp fangs with a single red fingernail—removing troglodyte bits from them. “Currently pathetic, but potentially an almighty death dungeon, since you’re Rank Three.”

Yeah, I don’t feel like an almighty death dungeon, Percy thought to himself.

“It’s only right that you become powerful!” Scarlet insisted, continuing her monologue. “I deserve it, and I can’t believe you keep making me tell you this. You need to level up, but you don’t have the talent, unless we cheat somehow!”

I don’t like cheating. Tricky tactics are okay, but…

“Don’t give me any of your fair-fight bullcrap, either,” Scarlet said. She buzzed her wings and flew around him, her red eyes focusing on his gem core. “I know you’re thinking it, you stupid, simpering stone! You’ve got multiple Rank Four dungeons nearby. That bitch Amber is in one of them, so you know it’s gonna do well.”

“I don’t understand why we have to have a war, though, you know?” Percy murmured. “I’ll eventually make a few more levels. You said we’re close to that chasm, right? I just want to have an epic undead dungeon, like, really thematic. You know, it’ll be so—”

“Don’t interrupt me!” Scarlet spat. “And stop saying ‘you know.’ I fucking hate that.”

“S-Sorry.”

Scarlet took a sharp breath. “Anyway, you don’t have an entrance to the surface and we’ve been fighting that stupid half-sentient troglodyte tribe this whole time! They don’t even understand adventuring. They just charge in, huge parts of the tribe.”

“T-True…”

Scarlet fluttered to the ground in front of him. “I swear to magic, Percy, you’re so dumb. I can’t believe I got saddled with you! You might as well be a floating potato.”

You’re dumb, Percy thought sullenly.

“Real adventurers would be so much better,” Scarlet continued, glaring at the claws at the tips of her long fingers. “If the troglodytes ever figure out how to get to your core, you’d be dead. This is no way for a fairy to live!”

“I’m sorry you’re not happy,” Percy said, hoping to placate her. “I’ll do better.”

“But I know that there’re a lot of dungeons nearby!” Scarlet said, ignoring him. “We could eat them, all of them, and you could become one of the most powerful dungeons of all time so that I could be the greatest fairy to ever live!”

Percy contemplated the situation. Scarlet is all I have. Also, I’ve no idea if what she’s saying is true, or what other paths I could take. And I do want to level, and be a grand dungeon, multiple floors deep, an awesome pit of excitement and dread to challenge adventurers! It will be so cool!

I’ve planned out so many levels, and I can’t wait to get Metal and Soul and make awesome undead armies to challenge adventurers! All I have now are zombie rats and troglodytes…

He gave in, like he always did. “Okay, Scarlet, you win. What do we have to do?”

“What do I have to do,” Scarlet said.
