250. CARMEN RAYMOND GAGLIARDI, murderer
LISTED: June 9, 1967
CAUGHT: December 23, 1968
DESCRIPTION: Considered “dangerous” and “troublesome.” Disguised himself by gaining 40 pounds, growing a beard, and wearing sunglasses.
Big Carmen. Carmen Raymond Gagliardi ran a red light. That’s why the cops pursued his rented car through the streets of Boston just before 4 A.M. on the morning of April 18, 1967. Propped up in the front seat of the car was the body of Joseph F. Lanzi, a North End bartender and gangster groupie. He had been shot four times, three times in the chest and once in the back of the head. Gagliardi and two others ran from the car into the night, leaving behind the body, a baseball bat, a .38 revolver, and a double-barreled Derringer. That’s why cops pursued Gagliardi for the next 20 months, finally capturing the Boston mobster two days before Christmas 1968. His accomplices, Frank P. Oreto, who was captured immediately, and Benjamin De Christoforo, who remained on the lam for 19 months, were also charged with the murder. Lanzi’s death was the 45th gangland-style murder in Beantown in a 37-month spree, and Gagliardi was prime suspect in several of the murders, although no arrests had been made. This time he’d given police the evidence they needed, renting the now-bloodied car in his own name and parking it in front of his Fifth Street home. The FBI named the suspected trigger man to the Top Ten list on June 9, 1967. The loan-sharking, gun-running extortionist didn’t let the manhunt push him from his turf, he was arrested at his mother’s Medford, Massachusetts, home.
