Pyet didn’t know what time it was. There were no discernible clocks anywhere, and she desperately hated not having any sense of direction. She knew little, but for certain that it was far later than she expected the evening to take her. She was in no rush to be back in the manor among the unknown things that lurked in the dark corners there. Curiosity was going to carve her heart out of her chest, and knowing that Winona could waltz in anytime she pleased didn’t sit well in her belly. This place wasn’t much better than the manor, though. The longer she sat in Matilda’s company, the clearer it became that maybe the stories about her weren’t too far off from the truth after all. It was in the odd, unreal movements she made, not quite human. Matilda was ethereal.

“Do you know the story of the Danaids?” Her voice was velvet, sending Pyet into the distraction of a lullaby.

“Can’t say it’s something I’ve ever researched,” she deadpanned. Matilda chuckled.

“You weren’t even well prepared,” she chastised again. “Do they no longer teach mythology in schools?”

“I wouldn’t know, I didn’t go to public school. The only ones my mother taught me were the common Greek ones: Zeus, Hades, Poseidon.”

Matilda frowned and her lip curled up into a snarl. Pyet could have sworn that she had seen the old woman huff in a mock laugh, but it was over before she was sure.

“What? It wasn’t exactly in the curriculum. You don’t know how I grew up, but information did not come easy.”

“They only ever talk about the stupid men. When will this world realize that it isn’t men that they should fear? It should be women—scorned women—women with a purpose. Women are the real threat. Men are just the vessels they use to execute their will. And yet, they forget.”

Pyet narrowed her eyes. She hardly had a good word to say in her mother’s favor, but she felt defensive nonetheless. It was Elric that made her the way she was. It was Elric Pyet needed to be upset with.

“Tartarus, that’s something you were taught, correct? Surely your curriculum wasn’t that far gone yet. Your mother had to have known better than that.”

Pyet grumbled a yes in response.

“Good.” Matilda took her long nail and placed it in her mouth. Pyet cringed from the chewing sound she heard from where she sat. “Eternal torment, that’s what awaits souls that piss off the gods. It’s said to be worse than hell, you know.” She spat a piece of nail to the side and Pyet felt her body physically recoil.

“You told me you weren’t going to speak in riddles.”

“You silly girl,” Matilda hissed, “these are not riddles. This is history, and knowing it will save your hide. Don’t let your pride get you killed.”

They both glared at each other, the room filling with tension so high that Pyet felt she might drown if she gave in. She felt her muscles tense, and Pyet felt the sudden urge to flee from this place.
