At about ten-thirty the earth moved into the comet’s icy tail, about thirteen million miles from its fiery head. Despite the intermittent clouds, New Yorkers came out of doors to see the auroral lights in the northeastern sky. People thronged onto hotel rooftops, along Broadway and Riverside Drive, packed into ferryboats and lined along the river bridges. The New York Times reported that “a million or so sky-gazers here were taking a lively interest in the heavens,” and they all wanted to glimpse the edge of something cosmic.
