Since I always had a somewhat holier-than-thou satisfaction in my own financial rectitude, I set down this transgression with as much wonderment as chagrin. Could I have thought, along with nearly everyone else, that it is no crime to outsmart an insurance company? This seems the more incredible to me now since for many years my chief financial gains have come from ownership of shares in insurance concerns. Alas, it matters so much whose ox is gored!19

The play, originally titled True to the Marines before being renamed Baby Pompadour, told the story of a prominent newspaper editorial writer, his wife, his amusing mistress (“this apparent ninny has the knack of making spontaneous remarks about current affairs which give the editor great inspiration for his columns”20), and the latter's romance with another man. Of course, such a scenario was rife with comedic possibility, which the writers did their best to exploit. Apparently, the script itself was not without its merits, since its pre-Broadway run at Long Island's Red Barn Theatre was, according to Graham, “reasonably successful.”21 Opening night at the Red Barn took place in June 1934, just weeks after the publication of Graham and Dodd's first edition of Security Analysis (the “Value Investing Bible,” as it has since become known, is now in its sixth [2008] edition22). The near-simultaneous release of his first book and his first theatrical production, coupled with increasingly lucrative expert witness assignments, proved highly exhilarating to the forty-year-old investment manager.

Buoyed by success on multiple fronts, Graham, who had already had one extramarital affair, entered (or descended, depending on one's views of marital infidelity) into a more adventurous realm of promiscuity:
