“I think it is a wonderful idea!” the Duke finally concluded and resolved in his mind at last.

The Duke of Wilmington hurried home with the news of Lord Lucas’s services, eager to share his discovery with Agnes. He worried about her reaction, and was concerned that she would feel affronted by his going behind her back to set her up.

He returned home, called up the stairs for her, and Mr. Gates informed him that she was out on the back terrace, enjoying the sunshine and the pond.

He rushed out there, and found her seated on the stone bench beside the pond, her blonde hair shining in the bright light. She was tossing pieces of stale bread into the pond, and koi were peeking their jewel bright heads out of the water to greet her and sample her food.

She seemed surprised that he was in such a hurry, and she offered him a seat on the bench beside her.

He was too eager, too nervous to accept.

He told her all about his visit, about how Lord Chesterton had pointed him in that direction, and Agnes watched him in awe as he spoke. Once he started, he found that he could not stop, and did not wish to until he had told her the full of it.

“My dear, I am so sorry that I kept this from you for so long,” he told her. “I know that I should have told you everything from the beginning.”

“Papa, it is quite all right,” she said, laughing softly behind her gloved hand. “You did it all to protect me. I understand completely.”

He smiled at her. “So you think it is a good idea?”

She certainly did.

Her first lesson was scheduled for the following Monday, so with much anticipation, they waited for the day to come.

“I am happy, Papa,” Agnes said over dinner the night before her lessons were to start.

“Happy?” the duke asked, setting his utensils down on his plate, looking hopefully over at her. “That is wonderful, of course. But why do you say it in such a way?”

She smiled wide, her gentle face pretty and innocent in the light of the flickering candles. “I think that this will work. This whole lesson with Miss Sundry. Surely she will help me find a husband!”

The Duke of Wilmington’s heart melted at the sight of her beaming face. “Of course, my dear. She will certainly find you a husband.”

They woke early the next morning, both eager to get going.

Agnes fretted about what dress she should wear, but the duke insisted that she would likely not meet suitors on the first day. She giggled like a small girl, and still chose a dress that she would likely wear on a social visit with her friends.

She kept eagerly glancing out of the window of the carriage as they went along, her smile never leaving her face.

“There it is,” the duke said, pointing up at the large home along the river that belonged to the baron.

Agnes’s eyes grew wide. “Papa, look how lovely their home is!”

She was excited about everything.
