JOHNNY

Dad, Anto and I walk away from the entry gate towards the opposite corner of the facility, looking for the pedestrian exit.

‘Anto, get on the phone to your dad, we need two cars and reinforcements.’ My best mate is on the job before I finish the sentence. I call Detective Francis.

‘Johnny, what’s happening?’ Her voice is clear and bright.

‘You tell me.’ I’m seething with anger but speak in an undertone, not wanting to attract attention.

‘Everything looks good from this end. Why?’ Her tone now serious. ‘What have you done?’

‘You’re telling me you’re not responsible for the police presence outside the front gate of the warehouse facility?’

‘I didn’t authorise any kind of bust. It’s not my team.’ I hear her yell something at Barker, then she’s back on the line to me.

‘We’ve got a clear signal from both vehicles. The coke truck has been stationary for six minutes and the cash vehicle is moving. What’s wrong?’

‘At least two of Carrera’s crew have been nicked. Not sure where the cash vehicle is, and Arturo Fuckface de Leon threatened my son if anything goes wrong with this delivery.’

‘I can get a car to your house in ten minutes. Do you want me to pull Amy and Sasha out?’

I consider the downside of the police knocking on our front door. I have to trust Marko to keep them safe.

‘Not yet. Find out who busted Carl’s crew and where they’re being held.’

Passing Warehouse Four, we see the decoy truck heading towards the exit. Moments later, we see a similar ten-tonne truck on the move, it’s the truck Dad drove down from Ballina but now it has different number plates and large Gracie Removals decals on the sides and back. They must have received the all-clear from their man at the front gate. Sami’s men are sticking to our plan.

‘We can see the coke truck moving now,’ says Francis, her voice thrumming with excitement.

‘Great! Pleased for you. Listen! Talk to the local plod, find out if they pulled over the cash van. An Econovan, New South Wales plates: SLD 125. If you lot haven’t pulled over that van, just keep tracking it. Don’t intercept!’ I hang up before she can argue, hoping she does what I said.

We’re still walking at speed towards the pedestrian gate when Dad pulls out his phone, glances at it, then passes it straight to me.

‘Is Carl,’ he says.

Since when did I become the bad-news guy? It’s Dad’s fault we’re in this fucked-up situation. I glare at him but he shrugs and keeps walking.

‘Carl, things have gone a bit haywire down here.’

‘You don’t say? What the hell is going on?’

‘The delivery went ahead without a hitch. Miguel and Tex drove off with the cash. Then we spotted Skeetar and Stick getting busted. We couldn’t see the cash van. It might have been there behind the paddy wagon, or Miguel and Tex could have…driven away.’

‘Has Sami double-crossed us using dirty cops?’ Carl snarls.

‘Not his style, he likes long-term relationships.’

‘Where are you now?’

‘We’re about to exit via a pedestrian gate on the other side of the yard.
