JOHNNY
Dad, Anto and I walk away from the entry gate towards the opposite corner of the facility, looking for the pedestrian exit.
âAnto, get on the phone to your dad, we need two cars and reinforcements.â My best mate is on the job before I finish the sentence. I call Detective Francis.
âJohnny, whatâs happening?â Her voice is clear and bright.
âYou tell me.â Iâm seething with anger but speak in an undertone, not wanting to attract attention.
âEverything looks good from this end. Why?â Her tone now serious. âWhat have you done?â
âYouâre telling me youâre not responsible for the police presence outside the front gate of the warehouse facility?â
âI didnât authorise any kind of bust. Itâs not my team.â I hear her yell something at Barker, then sheâs back on the line to me.
âWeâve got a clear signal from both vehicles. The coke truck has been stationary for six minutes and the cash vehicle is moving. Whatâs wrong?â
âAt least two of Carreraâs crew have been nicked. Not sure where the cash vehicle is, and Arturo Fuckface de Leon threatened my son if anything goes wrong with this delivery.â
âI can get a car to your house in ten minutes. Do you want me to pull Amy and Sasha out?â
I consider the downside of the police knocking on our front door. I have to trust Marko to keep them safe.
âNot yet. Find out who busted Carlâs crew and where theyâre being held.â
Passing Warehouse Four, we see the decoy truck heading towards the exit. Moments later, we see a similar ten-tonne truck on the move, itâs the truck Dad drove down from Ballina but now it has different number plates and large Gracie Removals decals on the sides and back. They must have received the all-clear from their man at the front gate. Samiâs men are sticking to our plan.
âWe can see the coke truck moving now,â says Francis, her voice thrumming with excitement.
âGreat! Pleased for you. Listen! Talk to the local plod, find out if they pulled over the cash van. An Econovan, New South Wales plates: SLD 125. If you lot havenât pulled over that van, just keep tracking it. Donât intercept!â I hang up before she can argue, hoping she does what I said.
Weâre still walking at speed towards the pedestrian gate when Dad pulls out his phone, glances at it, then passes it straight to me.
âIs Carl,â he says.
Since when did I become the bad-news guy? Itâs Dadâs fault weâre in this fucked-up situation. I glare at him but he shrugs and keeps walking.
âCarl, things have gone a bit haywire down here.â
âYou donât say? What the hell is going on?â
âThe delivery went ahead without a hitch. Miguel and Tex drove off with the cash. Then we spotted Skeetar and Stick getting busted. We couldnât see the cash van. It might have been there behind the paddy wagon, or Miguel and Tex could haveâ¦driven away.â
âHas Sami double-crossed us using dirty cops?â Carl snarls.
âNot his style, he likes long-term relationships.â
âWhere are you now?â
âWeâre about to exit via a pedestrian gate on the other side of the yard.
