CHAPTER EIGHT --- THE RIVER
The weekend was fast approaching and Bird had invited us up to his place on the St. Lawrence to hang out and basically drink the time away until Sunday night. How could we refuse? He happened to announce this a few weeks before around the camp fire, and Carl and Kurtie had asked him if they could come along. I knew what that meant because Carl was one of the biggest dope dealers in the area and dope from Canada was easy to get if you could get it across the border. I told Carl I wanted nothing to do with that stuff if he and Kurtie came up and he agreed. An illegal beer run was one thing but not drugs.
Rae was free that weekend, not flying with the airline, so she agreed to come along with me and Mark and Carl and Kurtie. Bird had just purchased this small island with the untaxed proceeds from his first year in business as a painting contractor. You sure can make a lot of money when you choose not to pay taxes or insurance on your business. He assured me he would go legit next year but I didnât believe him, he loved the thrill of gambling. Consequences meant little to him. But he had money and an island and I didnât, so I guess it was none of my business. We took several cars in a convoy up Route 81 past Fort Drum in Watertown and eventually entered Kring Point State Park where we could park our cars for the weekend and take the boats across the mouth of Goose Bay, to the island. Carl peeled off to launch his boat in the park.
As we started to unload the cars it became apparent to all of us that we would need a separate trip just for the beer. It seemed that we all glanced at the stacked beer at about the same time and laughter erupted. I loved going up to the river, it seemed so European to be so close to Canada and the anticipation of a trip to the duty-free store to stock up on Canadian beer was exciting to say the least. Carl could not go across the border with us to get beer because of a prior felony on drug related charges so he was not in the plan for a later trip. It was over an hour before we got our goods boated and across the bay to the island and situated properly.
Rae changed into a one piece bathing suit and I could understand how she could have been a model. She was now only in her mid-thirties but looked fabulous in a bathing suit; all legs. I liked being with her since she made me feel like a player. I knew I was out of her league and ten years ago she probably never would have talked to me; but now that she had come down from her high horse
