1909 New York City—Amy
Jack and Amy left the Sterling residence in silence. The rain had come and gone, and the heavy clouds had lifted, leaving behind a refreshing, clean scent in the air.
Amy didn’t bother to raise the hem of her skirt or dodge puddles as she crossed the brick path from the house to the street, passing the lions. This time, though, she didn’t pat their paws. They could have growled to their hearts’ content, or lifted her up in a Simba moment. She didn’t care. She was trying to wrap her mind around Jack’s revelation about Carolina Rose. If Amy was reading between the lines correctly, he had been and probably still was very much in love with her. Amy couldn’t help but feel sad for him.
Her watery eyes clouded her vision, but not her insights. On second thought, it wasn’t sorrow she felt for Jack. It was empathy. She knew firsthand what it was like to be at a loved one’s side when they died. She had been there for her parents. While she had turned her grief into anger at the diseases that killed them, Jack turned his into guilt for the role he played in Carolina Rose’s death. Both were destructive emotions. Thankfully, her anger mellowed, but Jack’s guilt was still sharp-edged and raw.
Patrick was waiting on the curb, his hand on the open car door. He had scrubbed his face and finger-combed his over-the-collar hair. His high cheekbones, strong jaw, and full bottom lip combined to create a striking profile, but it was his deep blue eyes that caused a visceral reaction. They were too wise for his age. Amy couldn’t begin to imagine the evil he’d seen in his dozen years. But he had adapted and survived despite the conditions. If anyone deserved a chance, he did.
When they reached the car, Jack said, “I don’t want to get in yet. Will you walk with me?”
A walk in the clean air was exactly what she needed, too, especially since the sun was peeking through the clouds now, and the humidity had dropped considerably. She smiled at Patrick, wanting him to know she appreciated his efforts to clean himself up, but she didn’t want to embarrass him. “Thank you for taking your job so seriously,” she said. “Will you meet us at 84th Street and Riverside? Mr. Mallory and I are going to walk in the park.”
“Yes, ma’am.” He closed the back door of the cab and hopped into the front seat.
Amy took Jack’s proffered arm, and when it was safe to cross, he led her to the crowded path on the opposite side of the divided drive. The shade-dappled path was bordered by a low, castle-like retaining wall on the river side and a hurdle fence on the other side. Below the wall the ground sloped down to another path meandering along the river and the landscaped park. The path led to the Little Red Lighthouse, where the George Washington Bridge would stand one day.
