“Let’s all remember to root for the correct team today,” Megan teased as the squad took to the sidelines Sunday afternoon.

“Yeah, I don’t think cheering for The Devils is going to be an issue,” I assured her, grinning.

It had been amazing how easily the cheer squad had welcomed me into their team. I really did feel at home in Texas in a way that I never did in Iowa. And I’d only been here for a week.

Megan had worked with me on choreography, to make sure I’d be ready for my fist game, and as we filed into formation, I felt confident that I’d blend in.

I assumed that Dwight had told her what happened between him and I, but she didn’t bring it up. She just moved our Saturday practice from the field to her house with no explanation. But I figured she had to know I didn’t want to risk running into her brother.

The Devils really were like a family. They seemed to take care of each other in a way I’d never seen from an organization before. It was wonderful.

As the game started, I was finally able to forget about Dwight, and just focus on the moves. I caught glimpses of him as he ran down the field, and I cheered just as hard for him as I did for everyone else.

I wanted to keep my anger at him. It was warm and safe and easy. He was a jerk, I was the victim, and that made sense. Unfortunately, I couldn’t stop thinking about him. His stupid handsome face. His stupid smile. His stupid dimples.

I wanted to hate him, but unfortunately…I liked him. If we’d been talking about dating, his straightforwardness with me would have been refreshing. I may not have ever dated before, but I’d been around enough women who had to know that a lot of them played games. And I wasn’t interested in that at all. If and when I decided to take a chance on a guy, I wanted to make sure that our cards were clear on the table. That we both knew what we wanted, what we expected, and where we were going.

Dwight seemed like he would be that kind of guy. And he probably was. But he wasn’t going to be that guy for me.

Cole scored for The Devils, and I was so lost in thought about Dwight that it took me a second to join in the cheering. I saw Megan look over at me, but I ignored it. I was pretty sure no one else had noticed.

By the second half of the game, things were going better. I’d been able to focus on what I was supposed to and was actually having a lot of fun dancing with my new friends.

The Devils were up by fourteen and it looked like they were going to win this one pretty easily.

As the opposing team’s offense took the field, we all huddled up, getting drinks and relaxing for a second before we started back in to cheer on the defense.
