It all could have ended almost ten years earlier for Bob, Darrel, Guy and Devon Girl. In 1983 Bob remembers driving back from the Bendigo National Buckskin Championship. ‘For some reason I took the Commodore, it was one of the few times I drove Darc’s car. Darrel and Guy were 12 years old, curled up asleep in the back seat and Devon Girl was being towed in the float on the back.’ It was dark and a crazy driver overtook Bob as he was doing a right-hand turn, just out of Ceres.

‘We were almost home. No one was wearing seatbelts,’ he remembers, shaking his head.

The Commodore spun around and ended up in a paddock beside the road. It was written off, the other driver’s car written off and the float was torn open and upended on the tailgate in the middle of the road. Devon Girl was on her hind legs. It was carnage except it wasn’t. Amazingly, the boys woke up, walked away from the car wreck, Bob was unscathed and as soon as he was able to untie Devon Girl’s headstall, she walked out from the gutted side of the float and began peaceably grazing on pasture as if nothing had happened. It was a wink from the universe.

People had stopped, other motorists were already abusing the offending driver for nearly wiping them out further up the highway.

‘It was amazing, not only that we all lived, but that was one time I thought Darcy would have a fit. I rang him from a farmhouse and he was completely calm. He came and got us and couldn’t have been more concerned or helpful. A truly complex man.’
