Chapter 26
Cain
I realize my critical mistake the moment my palm connects with her cheekbone.
Sheâs innocent.
With all the rage building in my gut like a skyscraper, Iâd forgotten Eden didnât have access to her phone and couldnât contact me to warn me even if sheâd wanted to.
Because I sent her away.
And now sheâs looking at me like Iâm a monsterâ¦when she was only doing what I asked her to.
If I didnât drive her to Damienâs dick before, this will certainly do it.
âShit.â I kick a garbage can, sending it sailing into a stall. âGoddammit.â
âI couldnât text you,â she states, pressing a hand to her skin. âIââ
âIâm sorry.â I rush over and gather her in my arms. âIâm so sorry. I donât know what came over me.â
Actually, I do. His name is Damien King.
Sheâs silent. Not even so much as a whimper or a cry escapes her.
This isnât like Eden. Sheâs slipping farther away with every second that passes.
And itâs all Damienâs fault.
Panicked, I drop to my knees and nuzzle her stomach. âPlease forgive me.â
Fear coils my insides when she doesnât respond. I canât live without her. I wonât. Iâll kill her before I ever let Damien, or any other man, destroy whatâs mine. He doesnât get my Eden.
âI need you to forgive me.â Frantically, I pull at the fabric of her dress. âI would never hurt you.â
âYou just did,â she whispers.
Desperate times call for desperate measures. I never wanted to tell her about my father or brotherâI wanted her to believe I had the picture-perfect family, before it was sullied by tragedyâjust like everyone else does.
But securing her sympathy is the only way to fix this.
Her eyebrows shoot up as I loosen my tie and unbutton my shirt. âWhat are you doing?â
âSharing my biggest secret with you. A part of me I keep hidden from the world.â
Iâve never let anyone see these scars. Not since that night.
Her face twists in confusion when I slide her hand to my back. âWhat happened? Your skinâ¦it almost feels like⦠burns.â Her eyes widen. âI thought you werenât in the house fire?â
âI wasnât.â I cradle her face. âThey arenât burns. Theyâre scars.â
âFrom what?â
âBelts, a few chairs, cigars. A cheese grater once.â
She looks horrified. âOh, my God. Who did this to you? Whyââ
âMy fatherâ¦and on occasion, my brother. It started when I was young, and it only got worse as I got older. As far as whyâthatâs something Iâll never know the answer to. Some people are just wired differently than us. They like to cause pain and suffering because they lost their humanity.â I breathe her in like air. âThey have nothing to pull them back when it gets too dark.â
They have no Edenâs in their life.
Nothing that makes them feel like a savior.
No one who will love them unconditionally.
Her eyes become glassy. âIâm sorry you had to go through something so horribleââ
I shut her up with a kiss. I donât want to talk about my family. I donât want to relive my past.
Life is about moving forward.
