Chapter 17
Ryan hasnât managed to snag a much better parking spot than Ben did. The walk to his car seems interminable and itâs only gotten colder over the last two hours that I was at the party. Ryan has one of those Thinsulate coats that is a lot warmer than it looks, as well as a hat and scarf. Iâm the only idiot who didnât dress for the weather.
âYou want my scarf, donât you?â Ryan says.
âN-no,â I say. Itâs hard to keep my teeth from chattering.
He rolls his eyes and unravels his scarf from his neck. I expect him to hand it to me, but instead, he gently wraps it around my neck, then tucks the ends into the neck of my coat. Itâs oddly intimate. âThere,â he says. âBetter?â
I nod.
We walk the rest of the way in freezing silence. When Ryan gets out his keys and presses the button to unlock his car, I nearly burst out laughing when I see the headlights flash on a Porsche. Itâs such a stereotypical arrogant surgeon car! Itâs even red.
âWhat?â Ryan says.
âA red Porsche? Seriously?â
He grins at me. âHey, I didnât have a car for like fifteen years when I lived in the city. Now I get to have my Porsche.â
I have to admit, itâs a nice car. When I slide into the leather seat next to Ryan, I can appreciate why he likes it. Itâs a lot nicer than the Prius. Iâm further impressed when I see the stick shift. I had no idea he knew how to drive a stick. I can barely operate an automatic.
Ryan winks at me. âWant the top down?â
âHa ha.â
âWhere do you live?â he asks me. I give him my address and he nods, âThatâs right on the way to my house.â
I canât help but smirk, and Ryan raises his eyebrows at me. âSorry,â I say. âItâs just hard for me to imagine the infamous Dr. Ryan Reilly with a house on Long Island.â
âWhy?â
I nudge him. âYou know. You were all about that bachelor pad you had in the city. Remember?â
Heâs quiet for a second, as if remembering that one-bedroom apartment with the great view and expensive furniture. âThings change,â he says simply.
With those words, Ryan takes off. And I am extremely glad to be wearing a seatbelt, because oh my God, he drives fast. Ben always stays a steady five miles above the speed limit when heâs got me and Leah in the car, which is as slow as you can go without people honking angrily at youâhe takes absolutely no pleasure in driving nor sees it as anything other than a way to get from Point A to Point B.
But I can tell that Ryan is really loving his Porsche. He grins as he weaves in and out of lanes, overtaking any car that dares travel within ten miles of the speed limit. Two people give us the finger before we get off the highway. Iâm slightly frightened, but itâs also thrilling. I mean, if youâre in a Porsche, you may as well be going really fast.
