Chapter Eleven

April 14, 1912 9:06 am

When Luke woke in what he assumed was morning, he pulled the covers up to his chin, snuggling down into the warm bed. For the first time in what felt like months, he had gotten a proper night’s sleep. He cracked open his eyes, surprised to see the bedside lamp had been left on. Then, he got a good look at the man next to him.

Quinton was lying on his back next to Luke, his dark, disheveled hair spread over the pillow. There was a faint shadow across his strong jaw that Luke wanted to nuzzle against. Quinton was asleep but had a small smile that Luke marveled at. He couldn’t deny his feelings anymore, and it was going to be the death of him. Luke inched closer until their sides pressed together, never taking his eyes from Quinton’s face.

“Staring is rude, Lucas,” he said. His eyes were barely open, just enough to have fooled Luke. “Especially in our situation.”

“I didn’t know we’d have so many boundaries,” Luke said. He draped an arm over Quinton’s chest and rested his head on his shoulder. Even with last night fresh in his mind, Luke was wary and expected Quinton to move him away at any moment. He surprised Luke by wrapping his arms around him.

“I suppose it’s too late to try to make breakfast,” Quinton said, sneaking a glance at his pocket watch on the nightstand. “People might begin to talk about us, Lucas. Vicious rumors to ruin my reputation.”

“What about mine?” Luke asked.

“No one really knows you. You’re safe.”

They didn’t say anything else for a long time, just lay there with the faint white noise of the ship humming in the background. Luke could have stayed that way forever, timing his breaths with the rise and fall of Quinton’s chest, listening to his heartbeat and letting himself drift away to the rhythm. He didn’t expect reality to hit, or for it to be so harsh when it did. Luke bolted upright in the bed.

“What’s wrong?” Quinton asked, sitting up with him. Luke buried his face in his hands, scrubbing at his own stubble. He needed something to ground him in the moment, something to keep the rising panic at bay.

“Tell me something about yourself,” Luke said. He turned to face Quinton, grabbing his hand and pressing it to his cheek. Quinton looked mildly concerned, but leaned in. “Right now. Tell me something I can hold on to forever.”

“Lucas…”

“Please,” Luke said desperately. “Just one thing.”

Quinton released a sigh, running his thumb over Luke’s cheek. “I don’t have any secrets, I’m afraid. I’m right here, Lucas.” He leaned forward, pressing his forehead to Lucas’. “Hold on to me. Nothing’s going to happen.” Luke didn’t answer, just pulled away, climbing from the bed to pull on his clothes. “I’m confident we can figure this out.”

“I don’t know, Quinton.” Luke said. “There’s a big part of me that wants to commit mutiny to save Titanic. But who am I to change fate? I don’t know what saving her will do to the future.
