Chapter 11
It Should Have Been Me
Maggie spent the past few days at Charlieâs place researching and learning everything she could about Eden and the Underworld. After reviewing Charlieâs research papers, audiobooks, and going over the first couple of pages of her thesis paper, it appeared that the humans knew more about Eden than she did. Although most of the research was based on mythology, with more than a few writings from non-credible sources and lunatics with zero evidence, the humans strongly believed that most of the events were factual.
With every piece of information Maggie gathered, she made it her business to cross-reference it with Jesseâs research. To her dismay, most of it proved to be true. Every day that passed she wanted to spill the beans about herself to her best friend. The secret of hiding her true identity, along with the details of Domâs death, was burning a hole in her insides. Even when she was on the brink of confessing, Angel sternly advised her against it. âIgnorance is blissâ was her motherâs sound reasoning.
The smell of coffee lingered in the air as Charlie exited the bathroom and followed the clinking sound of rattling dishes into her kitchenette. Maggie sat comfortably with one knee pulled to her chest at the small table as she absentmindedly swirled the creamer mix into her coffee mug. Her gaze wandered and focused rather hazily on the cupboard and mentally summoned it open. The doors obeyed with a somewhat tired groan of creaking hinges. A purple ceramic mug floated toward her just as Charlie entered the room. Using her magic around her blind friend was one of the small advantages that she relished. It was something she could not do with other humans who had complete use of their eyes.
âMorning! I was just pouring you some coffee,â she stated as the coffee pot began pouring itself into the mug.
âSmells delicious. Thank you.â
Charlie felt around for the seat directly across from Maggie as the coffee pot floated smoothly past her and landed soundlessly on the top of the stove. Pete sat obediently beside his handler staring back and forth at the floating objects, his tongue out, mesmerized by the flying items within his surroundings.
Charlie inhaled the fragrant aroma of her coffee and began surveying the table with her expert fingers as if searching for items to complement her drink. She placed her hands on a few scattered papers before Maggie intercepted the hunt with a kind inquiry.
âWhat do you need, creamer?â Maggie gently placed the creamer into Charlieâs palm.
âNo, a spoon, but thank you. Is there someone else here?â
âNo, Just us. Why?â The question was tossed nonchalantly, and Maggie was a bit taken aback.
Charlie set the creamer aside and brought the coffee mug tentatively to her lips. With a few smooth, slow breaths to cool her steaming âpick me up,â she sipped casually before answering.
âEither you move really fast or the coffee pot just grew legs and ran to the stove.â
Maggie awkwardly giggled. âWhat do
