Vinga was shown through a drab garden. I will never live in a city, she thought. Never ever! The youth who walked eagerly beside her, showing her to the door was nice! Suddenly she realized that while she had been living the life of a hermit in the forest on the mountain, the world had changed. Or perhaps it wasnât the world. Perhaps it was Vinga who had changed? Boys were no longer noisy louts it would be best to keep at a distance. They were exciting! Oh, she had so much to catch up with. That was why she smiled shyly and furtively at the young man. Imagine what a girl can do! Vinga had no notion of flirting. It seemed natural to meet the young manâs obvious admiration with an acquiescent smile but she didnât mean anything by it.
But there was one wonderful thing. Because Vinga had only met kind people, her self-confidence was growing every minute: Heike, Eirikâs family, Kari, this young man ...
Of course, there was the rabble that had thrown stones at them but they hadnât been trying to hurt her. Instead, she had had to defend her beloved Heike. Strangely enough, rather than frightening her, this had made her feel stronger.
The dressmaker was friendly. She remembered Mrs Tark, very well â that kind, fine lady â and said how sad it was that she had passed away. She had been one of her best customers. The dressmaker had often visited Elistrand, but the people who lived there now were not very nice and had a different dressmaker. No, out you go, son, you mustnât stand and stare when Iâve got customers! Heâs my son â heâs all right but a bit lazy sometimes. Now what was it you wanted me to make for you?
Vinga explained that she had lost all her clothes in an accident and that all she owned was this borrowed dress, and now she wanted to look nice. Would it be possible to alter it? And could Mrs Sebastiansdotter create an entire wardrobe for her? Underwear of the finest material, a coat, a dress for everyday and a party dress? Could she procure shoes from a shoemaker? Money was no problem. Vinga rattled her purse and felt wonderfully rich. After all, she had never had money at her disposal. After her parents had died she had discovered that Elistrandâs liabilities were three times as high as its assets.
âOh, my. This is a very fine order,â said the dressmaker delightedly. âWeâll see to it all. But wait a moment ... Miss Vinga, youâre so small and slim, maybe you ... You see, a very elegant lady ordered a dress from me. She called it an everyday dress but I would never be able to afford one like it! But she died. Not from an illness â it was an accident, a drama triggered by jealousy. Her dress has been hanging here ever since, and nobody has been able to afford it â except wealthy ladies who are too fat.
