Dear Dr. Steinschneider:

I enjoyed your article on Apnea and S.I.D. in the October 1972 issue of Pediatrics. I would like to share some ideas of mine with you concerning S.I.D.

As a psychiatrist, I have been investigating attitudes of mothers towards their infants. This has led to my interest in infanticide and child battering. As you know, both of these are much more common phenomena than are usually recognized. I have been investigating the incidence of infanticide by smothering, possibly being hidden within the category of S.I.D. A number of such cases are known to us, but unfortunately not in percentage terms. However there are good psychiatric reasons for suspecting that a sizable percentage of S.I.D.’s are in fact infanticides.
