Ash wheeled into the parking lot, nodding to Steel, the security guard, as he did so. Nix wasn’t far behind. It had been a short shift today. Just getting everything set up for the night’s run. It wasn’t him and Ash doing it tonight, they were free.

Ash slowed to a crawl and lined his bike up with the others outside the clubhouse. He heard Nix’s bike slowing down to make the turn into the clubhouse.

And out of nowhere, someone streaked past on a huge bike, no helmet on, smoke billowing from the back wheels as they donutted around the parking lot.

Nix swerved to avoid them.

“What the fuck is going on?” Colt was outside in a flash, bellowing at the top of his lungs. Ash looked up. Colt looked murderous.

“Dude, not cool-” Nix said, pulling up alongside Ash now.

It was Max. On Lyle’s bike. Lyle came jogging up behind, smiling like Ash had never seen him smile before. He looked ten years younger. He looked happy. Ash almost fell off his bike.

“Yes Max! That was good! Nice control of the…” But the elation died on his lips as he spotted Colt looking thunderous. He looked around. Rita was outside now, too. Sully and Rafe came out. Ash and Nix already had a front row position.

“Lyle, what the actual-” Colt began.

“Ah, fucking save it, Prez,” Lyle said the title mockingly.

Colt stomped forward and grabbed Lyle by the lapels of his cut.

“You know that Max can’t ride! What the hell were you thinking?” Colt roared, shaking Lyle.

Ash bit his lip. Fuck. What Lyle had done was reckless, Nix had had a near miss. But Ash had never seen Lyle looking so happy. His heart bled for the guy. He had no luck at all. Just wrong timing, unfortunate that everyone was here to see and hear.

“Ah, shit, Ash,” Nix muttered beside him.

“I know,” Ash hissed back.

“What do we do…” Nix fixed Ash a gaze. Nix’s signature gaze, blue eyes with the amber center. Ash could tell, Nix was feeling the same unexpected pull that Ash was, too. Fuck, Ash would have been first in line to tell Lyle to fuck off. He endangered lives by helping Max with this stunt. But fuck, the other night had been… the hottest thing of Ash’s life. Sharing a bed with Lyle and Penny, while he and Nix… It wasn’t just mind-blowing sex, he liked the company, he liked having them there, feeling like a little pack of wolves, feeling like he’d found… a family. He had a home within a home. Smaller than the MC but bigger than the embrace of Nix. Ash wasn’t prepared to stand by while it was ripped away from him, while it turned into a one time thing.

Ash’s brain tried to think his way to a win-win scenario. Because Lyle wasn’t being kicked out of the MC today. Not on Ash’s watch. And Ash always got what he wanted.

“I’m going to get Penny, you do whatever you can to stall things-”

“Yeah,” Nix breathed out, swinging his leg over his bike.
