The next to die was a 15-year-old male prostitute named James Doxtator. Dahmer met the Native American youth two months after the murder of Tuomi. He offered the boy $50 to pose for nude pictures. Doxtator was drugged, strangled and dismembered. On March 24, 1988, 25-year-old Richard Guerrero met a similar fate.

On April 23, Dahmer lured another potential victim to his house, the young man only surviving the encounter because Dahmer's grandmother arrived home unexpectedly.

By September 1988, Dahmer's grandmother had had enough of him bringing home young men late at night and asked him to move out. On September 25, Dahmer moved to a one-bedroom apartment on North Twenty-fifth Street. Just a day later, he was arrested for drugging and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy. The case came to trial in January 1989, and Dahmer was sentenced to five years' probation and one year in a work release camp. He was also required to register as a sex offender.
