Chapter 19
Bodin
"The way I see it, this city has three weaknesses: the air intake valves, reliance on technology, and the army. The only thing this city still needs from the outside is fresh air. The intake valves are a point of weakness. If you take those out, the city will run off of recycled, filtered air for a while, but eventually, the oxygen will get too low, and the residents will either need to vacate or they'll need to fix the valves."
"How long before they run out of air?"
He shrugs. "It could be weeks. I'd have to calculate based on CO2 output, plant conversion rates, and cubic air space."
"Why is the army a weak point? Seems like that's their strong suit," I point out.
"That one is interesting. The army was forced into compliance. They were inoculated with annual shots, but they were unaware that a few years ago, the shots contained a gene-altering messenger RNA sequence. It turned on the 'Obedience' gene and turned down the 'Critical Thinking' gene. The interesting part is that they knew they needed to establish a source of authority before turning the obedience gene on so that the target knew who to listen to. The army was easy because they already identify the U.S. government as their authority figure. The problem they didnât anticipate was just how esoteric the U.S. Government was to the army and that the chain of command would be broken. The army had to hear direct orders from the U.S. President to act. You can imagine how cumbersome that became. They assassinated the president after the EMP, hoping that would solve their problem."
"So, the president's dead?" I ask.
"Yeah, not sure why or how it went down, but I know he's not here, and a new order was established so fast that it must have been preemptive."
"So, who's in charge of the army now?" I ask.
"You know the woman from the orientation video you watched when you arrived?" Mark asks.
"Yeahhhhâ¦" I picture the woman with the slicked-back hair and thin, red lips. I ball my fists involuntarily at the thought of her.
"Well, she did many training videos for the army. They knew they needed a consistent message drilled into each soldier's head so they'd all have similar programming and they'd see similar results from the gene-altering shot. They didn't anticipate that that woman would become the face of the Government, which translated to her being the source of authority. The source after the president was announced dead." His eyes go wide with excitement.
"So, she's their leader?" I ask incredulously.
"Exactly." He sits back and folds his arms like he's finished with his explanation.
I'm trying to follow, but I'm going to have to swallow my pride and ask. "How is that a weakness?"
He reacts, as I suspected, with a condescending eye roll. "Without her, they have no leader. Comprende?"
"Ok. Wouldnât they default to the next person in line?" I ask.
âThereâs no one else that has anywhere near enough face time to become their new leader.
