The previous evening, I sent Fletcher a text, thanking him for the flowers and asking him if he could give me some time to think about everything. Even if I am starting to let hope grow inside me about what my relationship with Fletcher could become, it doesnât change the hurt I feel. Understanding his reasons behind the background check doesnât change the fact that my privacy was violated nor that the knowledge Fletcher now possesses could eventually lead him down the path to discovering the secrets I managed to conceal.
Driving to work this morning, Iâm smiling and humming along to the radio. The rain clouds that seemed to be permanently stationed over our lives have parted, and the sun is poking through. I have a man in my life who cares about me, and I work at a job I love. Michael is working and happy and has a goal for the first time in his life, even if it is simply moving out on his own.
I pull into the labâs parking lot and immediately notice several large black SUVs with government plates. Perhaps they are there to gather additional evidence from the cases they took over. Despite the knot of worry in my gut, I tell myself there is nothing to worry about. If there is cause for concern, I would have received a phone call or something from someone at the lab. At least I hope I would have.
I walk into the lab, and regrettably, the first person I make eye contact with is Frankie. I nod in her direction, and she stops to talk, clearly eager to share her gossip.
âWhatâs going on?â I ask, watching the black-suited agents filing in and out of the room, carrying boxes.
âItâs about the serial killer case,â Frankie says as she leans in and whispers.
âI would have thought they already had everything from that case,â I reply.
âOh, you havenât heard.â She looks at me with what I can only describe as utter delight.
âHeard what?â
âThey found another body,â Frankie replies, and my head immediately snaps in her direction.
âWhat do you mean they found another body?â The revelation is surprising, considering I did not receive a call to process a new scene. I was involved in processing every scene in this case. I am the most obvious choice to process the scene to confirm weâre dealing with a serial. They would want me there; they would like me to ensure all similarities are documented.
âSome woman, they found her splayed out on a chaise lounge in her courtyard,â Frankie continues.
I repeatedly blink as I process her statement. âAre they sure itâs the same guy? I doubt heâd risk his victim being exposed to any elements.â
âI guess technically it was a solarium,â Frankie corrects herself. âBut based on what I heard, she was laid out like the other victims, and it looks like she had on the same shade of lipstick.â
âHave they confirmed that?â
âDunno. They keep everything in-house on a need-to-know basis. Crazy, right? So
