Carys spends the evening trying to find out where Bill has been taken, trying to contact a solicitor and trying to calm Binnie. She fails on all counts. Lucy and Sara are not answering messages or phone calls. Even though she never wants to speak to Tom again, she calls him several times, also with no luck. She imagines him in a dark room, aiming his crooked nose into Bill’s spotlit, terrified face, interrogating him as he struggles against the two police officers who are still holding him down…

At gone midnight, her phone rings, number withheld.

‘It’s me,’ Bill says, his voice echoing like it’s in an empty hall on the other side of the world. ‘I haven’t got long. I’m in Wood Green Custody Centre. I need a solicitor. Go with whoever Suki recommends.’ His voice breaks. ‘This is all a big mistake, Carys.’

‘I know, love. I know.’

‘I wouldn’t… I couldn’t…’

‘I know. Lucy is making it up, it’s horrible. We’ll work it out. I’m trying to contact Suki.’

And she carries on, until seven in the morning, when Suki finally picks up.

‘They what?’ she says. Outraged, she promises to get her best criminal colleague down to the station, ‘sooner than is humanly possible’.
