Barnett was thrilled with the day’s session. In speaking to reporters later, he said that the dropping of the molestation charge will “vindicate my client.” He went on to say that Alcala could be considered a prime suspect in the Samsoe murder “only if it had been shown that he committed child molestation. His unique connection to this case has been severed.”

On April 8, Barnett began his direct case by calling several alibi witnesses to show that Alcala could not have been the person who kidnapped or killed Samsoe.

Tim Fallen came to the stand first. He stated that he had been in the area of Huntington Beach on June 21 and saw Robin riding a yellow bicycle there—the day after Robin went missing. Fallen stated that shortly after the young girl went missing, a police officer was showing a picture of Robin to people in the neighborhood. He told the officer then that the picture was of the girl whom he had seen.

On April 9, three witnesses reported that they had had contact with Alcala on key days and key hours in the Samsoe kidnapping, which proved that Alcala couldn’t have done the deed. Unfortunately for the defense, none of the three witnesses could be described as unbiased.

Alcala’s sister, Christine De La Cerda, testified that her brother was at her home on June 20 from about 4:30 p.m. to 4:35 p.m., around the same time that Crappa stated she saw Alcala in the mountains. De La Cerda added that her three children spent time with him that afternoon and even “looked in his glove compartment for gum.”

Another sister, Marie Toriano, offered into evidence a telephone bill showing that someone from Alcala’s home—her brother—had called her collect at her home in Fremont at 5:54 p.m. on June 20. This, Toriano believed, refuted Crappa’s testimony that Alcala was at Chantry Flats that evening. Alcala’s mother denied having made the Fremont call.

Alcala’s girlfriend, Elizabeth Kelleher, provided records showing that Alcala made a one-minute call to her on June 21 at 9:15 p.m. and left a message. At 10:08 p.m., the records showed, Kelleher made a call to Alcala and they stayed on the phone for nineteen minutes. That 10:00 p.m. time was the same time Crappa first testified she saw Alcala at Chantry Flats.

The defense then tried to further discredit Crappa.

Barnett called Poepke, the forest ranger who had worked alongside Crappa, to the stand. Poepke testified that he cooked a pizza dinner for Crappa “from [their] first paycheck.” During the meal, he reported, Crappa mentioned that she had just had a near accident at Rendezvous Turnout. According to Poepke, they received their first check on June 13 or 14. Poepke said that Crappa never mentioned another accident at any other time when they were together. The implication was that Alcala might have been at the location in question earlier in the month of June, but certainly not on the dates that Crappa testified she had seen him.

The defense then called inmate Joseph Drake to testify.
