I walk into Asteria's shop with a written list of questions and the determination to get all my answers. She is standing behind the counter, smashing herbs.

“Hi,” I say sheepishly, because I acted like a baby throwing a tantrum the last time I saw her.

She smiles at me. “Hi, Amaris. I’ve been expecting you.” Chills run up my spine. “Lock the door behind you and turn the sign to closed, please.” I do as I’m told.

“Why do you have a tunnel under your shop?”

“I see you’re jumping right in and skipping the small talk.” Hell no. I’m not giving her a chance to get distracted or bullshit me. I’m here to get my answers. “That tunnel is a shortcut to take the founding families where they need to be.”

“You mean to the forest behind my house?”

She shakes her head. “No, it took you there because that is where you were meant to be, Amaris. Someone else can walk in there, and the tunnel will lead them to somewhere completely different.” The tunnel thought it was my time to die, clearly.

“So, it’s a magic tunnel?” My brain is spinning, and this is only the first question.

“Yes, in a way, it is.” Okay, that’s good to know.

“Was Agatha to marry Nathaniel's ancestor?” She gives me a knowing look.

“The journal revealed another passage?” I nod my head. “Yes, they were. Agatha was Matthew Blakely's betrothed. Sadly, she died before they got the chance. Before you ask me how she died, I can’t say. When it’s time for you to know, you will.” I roll my eyes. All these half-truths are

annoying.

“Why do the Blakelys hate the Callthorpes if Agatha and Matthew were to marry?” She gives me a sympathetic look. She can’t fucking answer that either. Great. Maybe I can get around it. “What is the curse Nathaniel is under?” I hold my breath for her reply.

“The Blakely curse. All the firstborn males will be born a hybrid. They will have magic, but they are cursed to be vampires as well.” She looks at me, waiting for me to freak out. “You knew that already.”

“Yesterday was a day full of discoveries.” That’s an understatement, if do I say so myself. I continue my questioning without pausing. “Was Agatha the one who cursed the Blakelys?” I think I know the answer, but I want Asteria to confirm it.

“I can’t answer that.” Oh, Asteria, you already did. I need to figure out why Agatha cursed them. What happened for her love to turn to hate enough that she cursed a whole bloodline?

“Is there a way to break the curse?” Maybe if I help Nathaniel, I won’t feel so guilty, knowing it was my ancestor who cursed him.

“I truly don’t know.” A thought comes to mind.

“Do you think the Callthorpe grimoire will have more information about the curse?” Maybe it will hold the answers I’m looking for.

“I have never seen your family grimoire. It won’t hurt to look.” I roll my eyes again. She is seriously not
