“A ghost is a spirit that chooses to stay behind. They never cross the veil because they continue to feel they have the right to interfere, nothing more than a narcissistic tendency.”

Beyond and Further Still Sofia Brewer

Crew members rushed in. Mags checked Persi’s vitals; she’d taken the first aid class required in her contract. The others swooped around Sofia, congratulating her on what a success the podcast was sure to be.

“Magnolia’s dialogue needs some editing,” Sofia said.

“Nothing that can’t be cut and spliced,” said an eager-looking producer.

“And we need more on the lady.”

“Tom’s doing the research. What about the victims? Should we look into finding who some of them were? Telling their stories?”

“You mean the residents? Eh, they were wards of the state, probably poor as hell. Everyone’s heard that sob story. No, what we really need is a deep dive into who the headmistress was. She’s who the audience will really be interested in. A potential female serial killer hiding in plain sight; she’s the star.”

Mags still held Persi’s hand, cool against her own flushed and heated skin.

“I want Persimmon channeling her next.”

“Let’s get her out of here,” Mags suggested to anyone who might be listening. “I can carry her.” The girl was not much more than skin and bones, couldn’t weigh more than sixty pounds.

“I don’t think that’s the plan,” said Alice. She gave a nod toward the others.

The conversation around Sofia had tumbled into listing the scenes that needed to be shot in the rest of the castle tonight . . . with Persi, all while the child lay unconscious on the floor.

A need to protect the girl from this spectacle rose in Mags. She had to do something, had to put a stop to what was going on here. But how? She couldn’t think with all these people surrounding her.

“Screw their plan. They can’t record a thing while she’s out like this.” Mags hefted Persi into her arms. She marched past these living, breathing ghouls, out of the sound booth, and back up through the castle.

She reached the living quarters and walked down the hall toward Persi’s bedroom. Mags laid the girl in her bed and tucked a blanket up under her chin. Persi opened her eyes.

“Did he come through?” she asked, her voice hardly more than a whisper.

“He did.” Mags sat on the pillowy mattress and swept Persi’s bangs from her forehead. She couldn’t help but compare Persi’s life to a fairy tale: a princess being used for her talent, spinning gold for a queen, trapped in a castle. The girl’s skin was still waxy and unbelievably cool to the touch. Her teeth chattered, making a click-clacking sound like dice.

“What did he say?” she managed to ask.

“He just called my name and said he could see me.” Mags didn’t really want to get into this now. Persi had carried enough of the burden.

Persi let out a sigh. “So not what you were hoping for.”

“It was enough.”

“No, we’ll do it again.” Persi turned onto her side, tucking her swollen hands under her cheek.
