Chapter Three

Adam Kidder is waiting patiently outside Will’s office listening to Fournette tear me a new one. Almaz has nothing to do with this despite my efforts to convince him otherwise. Will is wandering back and forth in his head between having Prejean, Raphael, and Charlie take the two of us out to the bayou. Or maybe up north to Arkansas to a farm across the border for the razorbacks to eat us. Once I realized Romeo and Juliet were no more I called Adam to let him know we’d be having that drink a lot sooner and to bring his people.

“Now what?” Will asks. “There’s a shit storm brewing from the north and it’s starting to rain in the Quarter. Word’s leaked on what’s happening in Chicago and the locals are restless. People are starting to wonder why Maman hasn’t done anything. These assholes are reading the tea leaves and starting to take sides. Suggestions?”

“We stick to the plan,” Almaz says.

“I go to Perdition,” I say.

“Was this part of the plan?” he says.

“That’s a stupid question,” I say. “You want me to answer that? Tatiana can’t be found here. Adam’s people will set her up back at her place and have someone call in an anonymous well being check.”

Will shakes his head because he knows the DeLorenzos won’t just let this be.

“She killed herself,” I say. “We had nothing to do with it. We just need to change where she did it.”

“What about the EMTs and the nurse?” he asks.

“Have them meet The Head,” I say and look at Almaz. “You can do it can’t you?”

“Do what?” she asks.

“Mind-fuck ‘em,” I say.

“You want me to scramble their brains?”

“Just poach them a little,” I say. “So they question what they saw with their own eyes.”

“Can you do it?” Will asks.

“It might kill them so there’s that,” she says.

“Well, problem solved either way,” I say. “They forget or they’re dead.”

“Do it,” Will says. “I want you to go with Adam Kidder and his people. Reliable people, Martin. What’s this going to cost us?”

“It’s covered,” I say. “Adam’s making good for that thing we did for him a while back.”

A crease forms between Will’s eyebrows. He shrugs.

“Porcupine,” I say.

“What’s that?” Almaz asks.

“Right,” Will says.

“What is ‘porcupine’?”

“You don’t want to know,” I say.

Will looks at Almaz. “Don’t you have some minds to fuck?” He shoos her out of his office. “Go.”

I start to leave when Will stops me. “You really fucked us with Maman.”

“I’ll plead my case if she lives,” I say. “It’s my fault.”

“You better hope she lives because if she doesn’t,” he says, “Teresa LeFleur is going to go to town on you for killing her brother. She’ll make you famous.”
