Chapter Twelve
When Tuck woke next, she found it was time to get ready for her meeting with Fiona and the coven. She showered and partially dressedânot putting on a shirt as she brushed her hair, then her teeth. As she swished water, a woozy feeling ran through her. She spit the water out and grabbed the sink.
Closing her eyes, she inhaled, and a hint of blood touched her nose. Nausea swept her again as her stomached dropped, and her whole body seemed to drop with it. She was still standing, but it felt as if her entire body was falling down an endless pit.
What the hell did the strigoi want with her now?
âForgive me. You must seeâ¦â
Penelope. Her voice faded as Tuck felt the bottom of the pit nearing, the smell of blood growing stronger. When she hit the bottom, she lost her sense of self. Blackness erupted around her as if were a living thing.

A cut near her left eye was still bleeding, her right eye almost bruised shut. It had hurt when Josef had thrown her on the stone floor. As she placed her palms flat on the floor to lift upward, she realized she was not alone.
A single breath on her ear came shortly after that feelingâshe stilled completely. He was smelling her, ZachariasâJosefâs sonâbreathing in deeply as he moved up and down her body, taking her in. After what seemed like several agonizing minutes, he lifted her up into a sitting position, placing her back against the wall.
He looked deranged with hunger; his face contorted in want and need, his eyes completely black, his hair hanging long to his bare chest. Fear began to crawl through her, slithering like a snake over her skin. It was not from fear of him, but fear from knowing that she was completely defenseless against what he was about to do.
She was not a weak slayerâshe was the Grimâbut she had been made weak for this Damned, by Josef, for this reason alone.
He leaned in close to her face, blurry to her vision so near.
âDonât,â she breathed out, but he behaved as though he did not understand her words. Instead, he kissed her lips softly, then trailed gently down her neck with a care she didnât understand.
Why didnât he just rip her open if he was so hungry? With that thought, almost in unison with it, she felt the tips of his fangs against her rapid pulse.
She closed her eyes, accepting her fate.
Immense pain ripped through her when he bit through the skinâsharp, burning, forcing her eyes to open. That pain eased after several endless moments. She went numb as it faded away. She heard his suckling, felt his lips gently moving on her skin, his body pulling her close so she was lying down and he was against every inch of her. Her eyes shuttered closed in a few short heart beats, the world going gray, then black.
She didnât know when he stopped feeding, but it was long after sheâd grown cold.
