In a small town like Newport, finding dependable help was tough to come by. Especially with the low salary of a video store clerk. All Lucas cared about was getting movie rentals free of charge—the money was the icing on the cake. There was also the fact that he could sneak all the porn he wanted out of the back room and have it back in its place before the store opened the next morning.

Counting the cash in the register could wait until tomorrow; he had a date with Jamie Lee Curtis and his bong. Lucas turned off all the lights, set the alarm, and walked out into the night air. Rain had started to sprinkle down, bringing alive the distinct smell that comes with wet tar. He locked the door to the store and hopped in his beat-up Honda Civic. Reaching over to the passenger seat, he grabbed his CD case to find some tunes for the ride home. As he flipped through the sleeves, he settled on Significant Other by Limp Bizkit. He started the car, slid the CD into the player and cranked the song “Break Stuff” on repeat as he drove out of the parking lot.

The rain started to pick up, slicing through the beam of the streetlights. He squinted as he drove, the road a shiny and slick surface, making it hard to see the lines. I really should have waited until I got home to smoke, he thought. Lucas turned the wipers up full blast, hoping it would clear his visibility at least a few feet. He had never squeezed a steering wheel so tightly. The windshield started to fog up, only making matters worse.

“Oh, what the hell, stop breathing so hard, you dumbass.”

Cranking up the defrost setting would be ideal. Unfortunately, his defroster busted months ago, one of the many joys of living by himself. Things that should be a priority took a back seat to the useless pleasures of his life. He didn’t even make enough money to pay for all of his rent, but his parents chipped in to cover the difference, making sure their kid could survive on his own. He wiped away the steam from the windshield with his hand, temporarily clearing his view.

If the visibility was difficult in the main part of town, it only got worse as he got in the desolate area of Newport. His apartment resided on the third floor of a house that had been converted into three apartments, far out of town where rent remained dirt cheap. Right now, the other two apartments were vacant, leaving him in solitude, just the way he liked it. He turned down Breakneck Road, passing by the last streetlight as he drove onto the dirt road and into darkness. His headlights were now the only light available to him as the rain slammed on his hood, picking up intensity.

“I'm a mutha-fucking chainsaw, a fucking chainsaw,” he sang to himself, trying to take his mind off the driving conditions.
