Chapter Fourteen

Two hours into the evening, the bar was hopping, and Zeke was ever so slightly buzzed. The restaurant had just got in an order of fresh salmon which satisfied his bear and his hungry gut, and now, leaning back in his chair, he watched as more and more people made their way up to the dancefloor. The local band were well received and the mood in the room was lighthearted and fun. Zeke found his boot tapping the side of the table more than once.

Hmm, time to get up there and strut my stuff, he thought, eyeing his mates, trying to decide who he’d dance with first. Ty was relaxed and laughing over something Morty was saying. Ty never cared what anyone thought. If the locals didn’t like two men dancing together, well that was just tough shit. There wasn’t a law against it and besides throwing a few punches if anyone got rowdy about it, just made for good foreplay.

Daniel though… that was another matter. Zeke couldn’t believe his sweet mate had spoken up the way he had back in their room. Those simple words; Daniel didn’t realize it, but Zeke fell in love with his new mate in that moment. Those squared slender shoulders, the way Daniel tilted his chin, the firm voice stating what he saw as wrongdoings and a determination to make things right. It stirred an awareness in Zeke that his mate was not just a tag-along in their mating; he didn’t just accept the way things were. Daniel thought about things, deeply.

Glancing down at Daniel sitting beside him, Zeke noticed the man was busy tapping something on his phone. Leaning slightly, because he wasn’t going to intrude on Daniel’s messages, he asked in a low voice, “are you busy telling your fans on social media you’ll be at the conference?”

“What?” Daniel looked up surprised and his cheeks bloomed bright red. “Er… not exactly.” He held up his phone, and Zeke squinted in the half light, getting his eyes to adjust to the bright screen.

Light catching the planes of his face, the hat sending half in shadow.

Her easy smile – skirt and hair flowing in time to the music.

Drummer hunched, hidden by his instruments, rising up to punctuate the song.

Lowered eyes, sideways glances, the slight upturn of the lips…

“I’ve never been in any kind of club before,” Daniel said shyly, snapping off his phone and putting it in his pocket. “You can get so much more from an experience when you’re actually in it, or so I’ve found this evening. I’m making notes for my stories – impressions from watching people having fun.”

“I can make this evening more memorable for you,” Zeke waggled his eyebrows that made his beard twitch.

Daniel laughed. “I think you did that before we came out for dinner.”

Putting down his beer can, Zeke held out his hand. “I’d love it if you would dance with me. It’s just a basic two-step, I’m sure you’ll pick it up, if you haven’t done it before.
