Chapter eleven

Kyra's Burning

“Arimeus claims she can break Salaril’s seal. I wonder, will he be remembered as the Traitor of Runefall if I lose?” - Harigamun, Thoughts of War

“A shifting of the waters brings a fair girl to my shore,” Harigamun said, as Kyra picked herself up from the floor. “And such a well-defined physique for the young man you are still yet, Sam.”

Kyra looked at the warlord before her and knew immediately who he was. The tales of the Warlord of Kaiya and his armor of stone were told across the city of Runefall throughout the last few years as he conquered city after city, but she always thought the tales were larger than the man himself. Now, she found herself considering how small the myths actually were.

“Hardly a girl,” said Arimeus. “Though, far beneath your conquered years.”

Harigamun sank to one knee, still standing taller than Kyra as her head came level with the scruff of the warlord’s neck.

“Tell me, girl. Has nature prepared you for union with a man?” Harigamun smiled, knowing what he was saying would frustrate her. He didn’t expect her to want to answer his question, but Kyra didn’t know that.

Kyra’s eyes seemed likely to burst and the urge to let loose a great angry pain from her chest consumed her, she wanted to uppercut him. Then, a flash of skin in Kyra’s peripheral sight and a large fist came crashing into Harigamun’s jaw, but the warlord’s face did not move. Instead, the warlord smiled and looked towards his attacker with admiration.

“A fine hit. I’d expect nothing less from my own son,” the warlord said.

Samiel pulled his fist back from Harigamun and stepped backwards, falling to the ground and eyeing the giant before him.

“Yes, my boy,” said the warlord. “I’ve not the time to explain how, nor can I mend the time that has been lost. We will talk of it soon, but know that I mean the girl no harm and we will clear the air of your lineage once Kyra helps me break the seal.”

Thoughts of Ishmael came flooding back to Kyra. His dark demeanor and long dreads seemed like branches stretching out from the night, gleaming with a soft and comforting calling to security.

The young Ragi looked the warlord in his eyes. “The seal?”

“Do you know of it?” He saw into her gaze; it was a look of curiosity, not confusion. “Ahh,” he laughed. “So he was able to steal you away for some time. Very well, then. So you know we must break it?”

“I know little.” Kyra answered.

“Yet you seek much, I can see,” Harigamun answered.

Samiel flexed his chest and arms and stood next to Kyra. “What would you make her do?”

“Make?” the warlord questioned. “No, my son. I’ll not make the girl do anything. She knows the cost should she not assist me in breaking the seal beneath the city.”

Samiel turned to Kyra. “What don’t I know?”

“Much,” she replied. “I fear you don’t know as much as me.”

“What seal does he speak of?” Samiel asked.
