“No!” I fight against the thing holding me. I can’t be here. This isn’t real. I can’t see this.

“It’s a dream, Mattie!”

Dan’s shout is like a beacon on the darkest of nights, and I come out of the dream, seeking the safety of his arms. That wasn’t just a dream.

That was a vision.

“Easy.” He untangles the cover from around me. “You’re okay. It was just a dream.”

I throw myself at him, not ashamed of the tears. For once, I welcome them. What I’d just seen was horrific, something I will never be able to un-see. Something no one should ever have to see.

“What’s wrong?” Caleb’s sleepy voice only makes me cry harder. I don’t know why, but it does.

“She had a nightmare, I think.” Dan pulls me into his lap and rocks me. “It’s okay. You’re safe now.”

The light flips on, and a bottle of water is shoved at me. “Here, drink this. It’ll help.”

My stomach heaves at the thought. “Bathroom,” I whisper. “I need the bathroom.”

Without a word, Dan picks me up and runs to bathroom. I’m barely on my knees in front of the toilet before I’m throwing up. Every single thing I’d eaten in the last couple hours comes back up. Thoughts of what had been in that toilet dance in front of me, and I start dry heaving.

“What’s wrong with her?”

“I knew I shouldn’t have let her talk me into discharging herself from the hospital. Her headaches are back.”

“The seizures.”

Dan nods miserably. “Come on, baby. Let’s get you cleaned up, and then we’re going back to the hospital.”

“I…”

“No buts this time. You’re sick.”

I shake my head. “It’s not a headache. It’s…it’s what I dreamed about.”

Caleb squats beside me. “What did you dream about?”

“The roogie,” I whisper and shove my fist in my mouth to keep from screaming. I want to shout, to scream, to cry at the horror of what I’ve just experienced.

“The Rougarou?”

I nod.

“Does she still have visions?” Caleb directs the question to Dan.

“I don’t know…maybe? She hasn’t said anything to me.”

Normally, I’d get pissed at them for talking about me when I’m right here, but I can’t. This has to be some form of shock.

Caleb rubs my back when I lay my head on the toilet seat. I’m drained. My nose wrinkles when the stench reaches me. Caleb reaches up and flushes it without me having to ask. He takes care of me as much as his brother does, but it’s what his family does. The Malones were given the job of protecting living reapers. It’s hardwired into his DNA to protect me.

“It was a vision.”

“What did you see?” Dan takes up residence on the other side of me.

“I think I saw the man who turned into the roogie. It was awful.”

“Did you see him change?”

“No.” I curl up around the toilet. How to tell them what I saw?

“Did you see him feed?” Caleb asks quietly.

“Not exactly. I saw what was left of his family when he woke up. He didn’t know. I felt everything.
