WRIGHT

A rich man without a cause. That's what he amounted to, at the end of the day.

The word had gotten out that Wright was untethered from the campaign. As he pored over emails that morning, he wasn't sure how he felt about this most recent turn in his celebrity. On the one hand, it was good to know that Montana and the country beyond weren't hurting for fundraising needs. What most people were hurting for was money.

And some of the causes were bizarre, to say the least.

He had skimmed his inbox and replied to most inquiries, but his attention kept returning to one email in particular. It was one of the first that had been sent to him that morning, and the subject was almost too much of a coincidence for him to overlook.

"Bees," he repeated for the umpteenth time that morning. Incredulous, he scratched his head. Maybe it spoke to his own ignorance on the topic, but Wright had no idea until this morning's random missive that there were people out there so passionate about “preserving our pollinators.” Literally, that was what the subject of the email said. The sender had introduced himself as Buzz Berkley. Wright's first impression of the man was that he was wacky, a conspiracy theorist, but there was something about his clear devotion to his project that struck a chord in him. It was that sort of passion that Wright had been fighting to infuse the Montana campaign with all along; only in this instance, it was directed toward…

"Bees," Wright said again, and shook his head in wonder. It didn't escape him that this was the second time bees had come up in as many days. Maybe the universe was trying to tell him something.

Wright fired off a response to the bee guy, expressing an interest in hearing more, and figured that was as much as he was willing to commit to for now. He closed his laptop and leaned back on his chair with a weary sigh. One of the ranch dogs posted beneath his desk raised her head, then dropped it back down in disinterest. Wright felt bad for not knowing their names. Someone had clearly had a new litter since he last visited, and with Maxwell either working or spending time with Lena, Wright hadn't had the chance to ask somebody in the know.

"Good girl," he said, and reached down to scratch her behind the ears. The dog didn't appear to mind that they hadn't been properly introduced so long as the affection was forthcoming and frequent.

Wright rose and headed for the horse barn. His four-legged assistant followed dutifully.

He could use a hard ride. He needed time away from his desk and his phone to think. Escaping into nature with Julianna had proved even more of a distraction than staying at home, but maybe a better way to commune with the world around him and tap into a new well of inspiration involved getting back to his roots. A ride out
