Chapter Twelve
The weekend passed by in a blur. Her retreat gals were getting into the swing of ranch life. They had gone fishing on Sunday afternoon, but Donovan put the kibosh on camping out until the hog problem was better under control. Luckily, the hogs had been scarce on the ranch tour and in the pastures where the cows were.
The women were excited about building the dressage ring, too. Most of them had always wanted to try it and the couple that had never ridden before thought it was a better place to start than barrel racing. Janice agreed. She loved the hell out of barrel racing, but she didn’t know the first thing about teaching it. Dressage, however, had always had a place in her heart since she was a little girl. Kelly was the rodeo queen, but Janice had USDF gold medals and plaques with her and her winning horses pictured on them. They were still packed away with her things from Kentucky. She should display them at the retreat if this was going to be part of her curriculum.
“Janice,” Nate hollered, coming over to her even before she got off the porch of the ranch house. Kelly and Alissa were feeding the dogs for her and her mother was in the kitchen cleaning up. Janice had wanted to stay and help, but they shooed her out the door.
Nate looked handsome and grumpy this morning. His arm was out of the sling and he had been itching to go out with the ranch hands today, but he had promised her father that he’d take her to the auction. That was probably why he looked like he had a bee in his Stetson.
“I’m almost ready,” she said. “I’ve just got to check and make sure that Rita and Melanie know where we’re going.” Melanie was an Uber driver, so it fit that she would help them carpool to the auction.
“I understand it’s not your job to do a bed check, but can you please try to keep your girls out of my ranch hands’ beds?”
“What?” Janice asked.
Kelly peeked her head out the doorway. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing,” they both said in unison.
“Are we running a love connection?” Kelly teased, leaning against the doorjamb. Janice could hear Alissa and her mother singing in the kitchen.
“No, we’re not,” Janice said, scowling.
Nate led her away by the arm before things could escalate. “Sam wasn’t at breakfast today, so I went looking for him. He and the redhead were buck naked in his bunk.”
“That’s Heidi. Doesn’t Sam share a room with Diego, though?”
“Guess where Diego spent the night?”
Janice stopped dead in her tracks. “You’re kidding?” He must have spent it with Tracie, who was Heidi’s roommate.
“No. And while I don’t give a damn who’s banging who, I can’t have it affecting my ranch hands’ jobs.”
“Did Diego make it to breakfast?”
“That’s not the point,” Nate growled.
“Seems to me, Sam is ruining it for everyone and that’s his problem. Not mine.” Janice stepped in closer to him.
