NEW INTERESTS

I had a very hectic day at work. It was supposed to be a co-chair with another lawyer, another junior partner named Frank Galbiati. Though, he’d decided to slack off. He had been a junior partner much longer than me, and pulled some kind of imaginary seniority, which meant I was left to deal with everything pretty much on my own.

I was very much surprised when I saw him in court and participating, glancing constantly at my notes, because he had none. That was probably because he was trying to suck up to our high-profile clients, I realized.

He was trying to take all the credit while having done no work, and that was something I wasn’t about to allow.

Overall, I didn’t mind the extra work. Partly because having something to do meant I couldn’t stress about my stalker or dwell on the fact nothing had happened since the fire, which couldn’t be good. And partly because I knew how to cash out in the end.

I made sure Grant knew who was actually winning this case for the clients. In the end, I managed to score a huge settlement. I was talking about dozens of millions of dollars, and that made my clients rather happy. That made Grant happy too because a large portion of that money would go to the firm.

Grant came to me sometime during the day to pat me on the back for a job well done.

“It was easy once our private investigator discovered foul play,” I said humbly with a small shrug.

“And how was Frank?”

“Frank was… adequate.”

Grant nodded at that, clearly understanding what I meant. I never allowed myself to openly badmouth a fellow coworker, but over the years, Grant had become fairly good at reading between the lines. His next words confirmed as much. “Next time, you’ll be able to choose your own partner.”

“I would appreciate that,” I replied with a smile.

“I won’t keep you from your work. Go, make me some more money.”

That made me smile. There was nothing Grant loved more than money. Other than perhaps his son.

Actually, golf and David share second place. I wasn’t even sure his wives, any of them, ever made it to the top five, I joked.

Speaking of David, I decided I wanted to see him. It had been a while since we’d last seen each other. Come to think of it, the night of the fire had been our last encounter. And I was ready for some action.

So I texted him:

We should meet tonight.
