10th April 1932

Well, they arrived, three days ago. I thought at first Stephen had changed. He looks leaner and certainly seems happier, but is, unfortunately, as pleased with himself as ever. It is as well that Daphne is also pleased with him, and he with her. I had expected that she would, perhaps, need putting at ease in this new environment, but not a bit of it; I have never known anyone more at ease! Not a trace upon her face of diffidence or shyness, as dear G & S would say. This is not meant to be a criticism, in fact I am rather envious of her assurance. She is a good-looking girl — handsome, perhaps, rather than pretty, with corn-coloured hair, china-blue eyes and an athletic figure. It seems she excels at all sports and, so far as I can detect, has little interest in anything else. I don’t think she noticed the curtains!

She hasn’t at all taken to Molly Pascoe. Says she looks sly. I say all the Pascoes look like that, it doesn’t mean a thing, but I can tell she is not satisfied. Thank heaven, she has said nothing derogatory about Nanny, though on reflection she hasn’t said anything nice, either.

Beatrice is a pretty little thing, but not surprisingly seems unsettled and fretful. No doubt she will settle after a while.
