Hatching

As strokes lengthen they are eventually called hatches. Hatches are a series of parallel strokes of varying lengths. They can be applied one next to the other for a block of color or more or less widely apart to allow the paper surface to show through.

Crosshatching

As the name implies, crosshatching is simply hatching in one direction, then hatching over the first application in another direction. Crosshatching and hatching can be done with one or more colors to achieve various results.

Layered Crosshatching

The process of crosshatching is not limited to two layers of hatching. Using a wide array of colors, crosshatching can be used to achieve myriad beautiful hues through the combination of accumulated hatches.
